Aggressive driving is a widespread problem. Such drivers are impatient, in a hurry, rude and dangerous. They drive too fast, frequently change lanes, cut off other drivers, fail to signal, run red lights and tailgate. If you have been on the road, you likely have seen such drivers.

And their behavior threatens other drivers – the ones who follow traffic rules. Even the best defensive driving maneuvers may not be enough to prevent a collision with an aggressive driver, who thinks every other driver should make way for him or her.

More dangerous than drunk drivers

We know that aggressive driving frequently takes place and plays a major factor in collisions that result in injuries and fatalities. According to the Arizona State University Center for Problem-Oriented Policing, aggressive drivers lead to, are or cause:

  • More traffic fatalities: Aggressive driving behavior contributes to two-thirds of all U.S. traffic fatalities. This includes improperly changing lanes, running red lights and speeding. Speeding contributes to roughly one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities.
  • More dangerous than drunk drivers: People who subscribe to aggressive driving behavior wind up killing two to four times the number of people than drunk drivers.
  • A negative halo effect on other drivers: Aggressive drivers generate a testy and uncivil atmosphere, creating a pattern that can lead to increased anger, anxiety and even aggressive driving among other drivers.

We know that driving is a privilege and not a right. However, aggressive drivers often claim they have the right to maneuver on the road in whatever manner suits them. These are dangerous individuals.

Do your best to avoid these drivers

Watch out for these hostile, self-centered and competitive drivers who likely have personalities that lead people to shun them in their everyday lives. Do your best to shun them on the road. Keep your distance, stay away and do not allow them to stir up trouble for you and other drivers. Stay safe on the road.
